Evaluation written up

1. We were asked to make a music video for our coursework using a song made already by an artist but with everything else different. We were told that we should all adopt roles and work together in order to create a video where we all contributed. A music video is a visual piece of entertainment combined with sound creating a link between the two for the audience to gain a full understanding of its concept. The conventions of a dance music video (which we did) include a mainly performance based video, with its aim to entertain the audience. Also there are often strobe lighting effects and a party atmosphere is a main theme presented throughout. This usually focuses on giving positive vibes and makes the audience feel happy rather than explaining a concept which has a serious meaning behind it. Therefore many handheld and point of view shots are often used to make the audience feel like they are part of the scene and that they are partying with their idol. We followed these conventions in numerous ways when creating our music video. For the main duration of the video we used a party scene with many strobe lighting effects and items that are often seen at parties such as alcohol glasses. Therefore the lighting was very dark also so that the strobe lighting would have more of an affect. Our chosen artist, Avicii uses his logo in many of his videos and on album covers etc. We followed this idea by making our own logo for our cd covers. We also followed the genre by showing the artists throughout being the main character. Avicii does this in many of his videos where you can see him performing. And because these are new artists we did this intentionally so that our audience could build a relationship with them by seeing their characters and relating to them. Overall, we focused on entertaining the audience as this is a theme that we massively followed from our genre, dance. We challenged the conventions of a dance music video by making it mainly a concept video. This is so it would be unique and have more of an impact on the audience. Our concept was that partying shouldn’t take over your life and that family is more important. We also didn’t include much of a performance element as we wanted our fans to get to know the artists more as they are new artists, which relates to Dyers theory. Overall our music video therefore challenges the dance music genre as we have used a concept as the main theme instead of entertaining, which most dance music videos do.

2. Our ancillary products have come out very successful overall. This is because they match the music video so well and create an excellent link for the audience to be captivated by the presentation. We did this by using the same colour schemes in each the video and the ancillary products. This was mainly green and pink as they are party themed colours and represent the strobe lighting which is an element that we often used making the two link. There is also a strong link between the representation of the characters in both the video and the digipak and advert. One is seen to be the scruffy party animal and the other is seen as a more level-headed smart character. The text in both is also the same as we used the same fonts which relate to the music video. I think that this link is so strong due to the concept being relayed onto the digipak and advert. The ancillaries show how there is a separation in the two personalities but also have an edge of the entertaining side which is the partying. This make them look like dance videos. We decided to submit Amy’s digipack and Georges advert as the epitomise our concept. They both use the correct colours which relate in the right amount of proportion. Mine were too bright and overshadowed the main part of the ancillaries whereas they have a good overall blend.

3.
It is very important to evaluate my work as it allows me to see where I have made improvements and use strong ideas and where I have made a mistake or something needs tweaking. Also it is good to evaluate as it allows me to see if I am relating to the artists enough and if I’m meeting conventions of the dance genre or not. I used Youtube to showcase my video as it allowed us to gain honest critics from the general public. Also Youtube is one of the most used websites in the world to view videos and there a lot of our target audience, dance music fans, would be able to view it for free and give us feedback. We could then see our strengths and weaknesses of the video so we could make adjustments afterwards. This is the main reason why did a rough cut first before submitting the final piece onto Youtube. We received the following 3 comments on our music video.
‘Great video but I think the shots are overall too long’
‘I love the concept of this video. It’s different’
‘You should have included more of the performance element to entertain us more!’
These comments made me feel a boost of ambition as I was able to see where we had gone wrong and what our audience specifically wanted to see. It also gave me confidence in what we had done so far so I was happy with the overall product. Due to the audience feedback we inserted more, shorter shots into the video to break it up more. This is so the viewer doesn’t get bored of seeing the same shots over again. We therefore used different angles to create a different perspective. Also we added more from the party scene as our audience clearly want to see more of the characters partying so they could relate to it. If I was working in the music industry feedback would allow me to see what the overall target audience liked. However I would then use what they liked and changed it slightly to give it a more unique feel and make the music video be more relatable and entertaining.

4. Firstly we were asked to create a questionnaire for audience research, to find out what appeals to the audience in terms of music videos. We then record these results using a random selection of 50 people. We then used a digital camera and interviewed some people to find out more in-depth analysis of their opinions regarding music videos. This allowed us to see their emotions and feelings towards the categories we asked for. We used a lot of technology throughout the process of making this video and without it the video wouldn’t have been as affective. The technologies include a green screen, which we used when taking photos of the characters for our digipaks and adverts. This allowed us to crop out the images and insert them with effects and different backgrounds. We also used photoshop CS6 to edit and formulate these pictures into a structure that include all the factors of our music video. When editing our video we used Final Cut Pro X on Apple Mac computers. This allowed us to add effects and edit all the bits of video we had taken to result with our end product being this video. This created a synoptic video and was very easy to use once we got used to it. We also used blogger throughout the progress to document all the findings and complete documents on our progress and why we were choosing to do it in a certain way. We used Youtbe to display the end video to our audience. This allowed us to make a rough cut and see audience feedback so we could the enhance the product which we had already made. This is because it is a free site and one of the most view video channels in the world so our audience would see it and could comment. We also used a HD camera in the creation of our video to get shots of our scenes in good pixilation and so the images look sharp. It was also easy to carry around and film with using a tripod. We also referred to the internet for a number of reasons to find information such as information on out artist, Avicii. We mainly used google as our search engine for this as it is so quick and finds many results for what you are looking for.
